It is important for us to thoughtfully consider the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's calls to action around curriculum development. Through the increased awareness of Indigenous knowledges and cultures in post-secondary learning spaces , and the rising use of Generative AI , we see an emerging need to explore the connection between the two in a culturally appropriate manner by building safe and collaborative space for dialogue . His panel was made possible in partnership with Indigenous industry professionals who currently work with Artificial Intelligence, community members, and members of the UBC campus. UNESCO launched a pioneering report to foster culturally sensitive technological development and information dissemination, ensure the data sovereignty of over 800 Indigenous Peoples in Latin America and the Caribbean, and prevent inappropriate cultural adoption within the accelerated development of artificial intelligence (AI). Inteligencia artificial centrada en los pueblos indígenas: perspectivas desde América Latina y el Caribe González Zepeda, Luz Elena UNESCO Office Montevideo and Regional Bureau for Science in Latin America and the Caribbean Martínez Pinto, Cristina Elena The report, " Indigenous People-Centered Artificial Intelligence: Perspectives from Latin America and the Caribbean ," was discussed for the first time at the Third Global Forum against Racism and Discrimination, recently held in Sao Paulo, Brazil. It urges the participatory inclusion of local and indigenous communities, an appropriate data operation respecting their autonomy, proposes public policies...

The Intersection of Technology, creativity and indigenous knowledge systems. The following video discusses how Indigenous Knowledges and AI can create opportunities in education to understand important concepts such as sustainability as well as our roles and responsibilities with respect to the environment. This interview was with Ray John Jr. who is from the Oneida Nation and Mathias Babin who is a PhD student at Western University working in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science.    00:26 How this project helps to understand concepts found within Indigenous Knowledge Systems 02:29 How the AI came to determine that sustainability is the best outcome on its own                              10:17 Why it is important to work in partnership with Indigenous Peoples and communities                     12:29 How this project...

Indigenous Representation in AI: 21st Century Implication.

Image
This study examines how well distinct indigenous cultures are represented and how artificial intelligence views ethnicity. The researchers used a quantitative approach, analyzing various datasets to identify patterns AI uses to classify human facial structures. The results show a lack of diversity in representation, highlighting the need to incorporate new datasets and ethnicity-related data into AI systems. These findings have important implications for educators, parents, and policymakers, as they demonstrate the necessity of including members from all ethnic groups and communities in this rapidly growing platform. Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have the potential to transform many industries, but there are still concerns that they may worsen existing inequalities and encourage racial prejudice. This literature review aims to provide a thorough analysis of research findings and differing perspectives on how AI systems can discriminate against ethnic minorities. Res...

For many indigenous communities, passing down knowledge to the next generation is critical to cultural survival. The preservation of these cultures have traditionally been done through the study and documentation of languages, traditions and rituals. This session will delve deep into the other roles AI can play to ensure that our collective knowledge, histories and cultures will be around for generations to come.
