This Side event is being held to follow the human rights dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the rights of Indigenous Peoples at the twenty-fourth session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. It aims to generate discussions to contribute to the Forum's theme of " Implementing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples within United Nations Member States and the United Nations system, including identifying good practices and addressing challenges ". A GEF 8 Initiative to increase support for Indigenous- and community-led environmental stewardship: Presenting the Call for Expressions of Interest.

   In December 2024, the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council approved an expansion of support for Indigenous- and community-led environmental stewardship through the GEF-8 Inclusive Conservation Initiative . The World Wildlife Fund (WWF US) will serve as the GEF agency to further develop, implement, and execute the Initiative with partners. The Initiative's objective is to increase resources, organizational strength, and recognition for Indigenous Peoples and local communities' governance and stewardship of territories, lands, waters and resources to deliver global environmental benefits .  This side event will present the design of the project, based on co-design dialogues conducted with representatives of Indigenous Peoples and local communities. This yearly overview serves to document and report on the developments Indigenous Peoples have experienced throughout 2024 and includes a special focus on Indigenous youth. In the context of the main theme of the 24th session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, particularly on the status of the implementation of UNDRIP, The Indigenous World 2025, with its focus on Indigenous Youth , provides important insights into their crucial role in advancing Indigenous rights. The annual launching of The Indigenous World provides a unique opportunity for IWGIA to organize a panel with Indigenous leaders, UN mechanisms and other key stakeholders to address some of the core trends and developments with regards to Indigenous Peoples rights over the past year. This Side event will review and summarize the study entitled: "Evaluating Institutional Structures to Improve the Health and Wellness of Indigenous Peoples Globally: The Indigenous Determinants of Health Measurement Instrument". This event will feature four presentations and a discussion section. Speakers will elaborate on the four systemic areas covered in the IDH Scorecard, which aims to evaluate: (a) how effectively institutional policies address distinct risks and protective factors Indigenous communities face and (b) whether relevant stakeholders are prepared to uphold the principles of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in meaningful ways. Indigenous Peoples inhabit coastal and marine environments across every major continent except Antarctica, with an estimated 27 million Indigenous Peoples from 87 countries relying on these areas for cultural identity, economic activities, food security, and overall well-being. Despite their critical role in managing coastal and marine ecosystems, they remain underrepresented in global discussions on the blue economy, climate finance, and marine policy. The Rights of Indigenous Peoples in the Context of Just Transition Economy: The Rights of Indigenous Peoples in the Context of Just Transition Economy (UNPFII Side Event);

The side event discusses development projects, biodiversity and climate action in the context of a just economy transition. Indigenous Peoples of the world are seeking fair conditions for the transition to a green economy, when the extraction of critical minerals does not pose risks to the ecosystems on which depend sustainable development and existence of Indigenous Peoples. In 2025 Brazil will host the 30th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Climate Change with the main theme "The Economy of Transition". The side event will help prepare Indigenous Peoples from various sociocultural regions of the world for the upcoming discussions, including on the solutions they will propose.
