A GEF 8 Initiative to increase support for Indigenous- and community-led environmental stewardship: Presenting the Call for Expressions of Interest.

   In December 2024, the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council approved an expansion of support for Indigenous- and community-led environmental stewardship through the GEF-8 Inclusive Conservation Initiative . The World Wildlife Fund (WWF US) will serve as the GEF agency to further develop, implement, and execute the Initiative with partners. The Initiative's objective is to increase resources, organizational strength, and recognition for Indigenous Peoples and local communities' governance and stewardship of territories, lands, waters and resources to deliver global environmental benefits .  This side event will present the design of the project, based on co-design dialogues conducted with representatives of Indigenous Peoples and local communities. The side event discusses development projects, biodiversity and climate action in the context of a just economy transition. Indigenous Peoples of the world are seeking fair conditions for the transition to a green economy, when the extraction of critical minerals does not pose risks to the ecosystems on which depend sustainable development and existence of Indigenous Peoples. In 2025 Brazil will host the 30th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Climate Change with the main theme "The Economy of Transition". The side event will help prepare Indigenous Peoples from various sociocultural regions of the world for the upcoming discussions, including on the solutions they will propose.
