Strengthening Engagement with Indigenous Peoples: Knowledge Systems, Languages, Policy and Practice - UNPFII25 Side Event.


This side event at the 25th Session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues is organized by UNESCO. It will provide a space for dialogue among Indigenous representatives, Member States, scientific experts and UN partners. It will inform the update of the UNESCO Policy on Engaging with Indigenous Peoples and will highlight concrete actions and partnerships.


The discussion will focus on practical entry points for co-creation, accountability, and sustained partnership across UNESCO's sciences, education, culture and communication programmes, ensuring that contributions gathered during the Forum directly inform the Policy framework.

ObjectivesFacilitate dialogue on practical and institutional approaches to meaningful engagement with Indigenous Peoples.
  • Identify practical approaches to integrating Indigenous knowledge systems and languages into policy and programme implementation.
  • Gather recommendations to inform the revision of the UNESCO Policy on Engaging with Indigenous Peoples.
  • Highlight partnerships and experiences demonstrating joint mobilization of Indigenous and scientific knowledge systems.
  • Promoting rights-based, participatory and intercultural approaches across UN processes.
