Self-determination and Autonomy of the Indigenous Peoples of Mexico (UNPFII Side Event).
Self-determination and Autonomy of the Indigenous Peoples of Mexico: advances in the implementation of the Constitutional Reform, in compliance with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
In compliance with international instruments, the Mexican State has strengthened its efforts to guarantee the rights of Indigenous Peoples, particularly through the decree published on 30 September 2024 in the Official Gazette of the Federation, which amends, adds to, and repeals various provisions of Article 2 of the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States, concerning Indigenous and Afro-Mexican Peoples and Communities, which entered into force on 1 October 2024.
The reform incorporates the recognition of Indigenous Peoples and communities as subjects of public law with legal personality and their own patrimony, and includes provisions related to health, such as the development, practice, strengthening, and promotion of traditional medicine, as well as their right—particularly that of Indigenous women, children, and youth—to access health services. It also incorporates provisions on various rights referred to in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), as well as in international commitments such as the International Decade of Indigenous Languages.
The side event aims to address public policies and actions for the implementation of the constitutional reform, within the framework of the application of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).
